Her Canna Q&A with Monica Lo, Sous Weed

Monica Lo said:

“Ask yourself: What’s your truth? What’s your passion? Then you turn those two elements into action. The cannabis industry is wide open for you to make something that’s wholly different and uniquely yours.”

Describe yourself and what you do.

I’m a photographer and creative director working with various brands in the food and cannabis industry. I’m also the creator of the blog called Sous Weed.

When did you get started working with cannabis?

Sous Weed began as a passion project to document my cannabis creations using the sous vide method. The interest first came from the need for holistic pain management when I herniated a disc. It was a struggle just getting out of bed and I wasn’t responding well to the pain meds the doctor had prescribed. I made the switch to cannabis because it was easier on the system and helped get me through my day-to-day tasks.

At the time, I had a strict landlord and I needed to be very discreet with the wafting scent of cannabis, so cooking on the stovetop was out of the question. I was the creative director of a sous vide startup and thought I’d put our machines to the test—it worked! With the sous vide method, it was easy to make healthier cannabis infusions and save money by making less trips to the dispensary to purchase edibles.

What is your vision for your creative endeavors?

My goal is to encourage people to use the plant as another superfood ingredient in the kitchen. Let’s be frank: If you live in a legal state, cannabis products are getting increasingly expensive, which means patients and caretakers are finding it difficult to get medicine in dosages they need, at an affordable price. When you do-it-yourself, you have the freedom to dose your own meals to your personal preference.

What is your Superpower?

I make shit happen. No wishing, no hoping—I put in the work and I can create something out of nothing.

What has been your greatest obstacle in this industry or with your business to date?

Being comfortable in saying “no.” I often overextend myself because I say yes to everything, but you can still be a kind-hearted person and say “no.” My goal this year is to be vigilant with the time and energy I give out.

My goal is to encourage people to use the plant as another superfood ingredient in the kitchen.

What is your advice for women in the cannabis industry?

Ask yourself: What’s your truth? What’s your passion? Then you turn those two elements into action. The cannabis industry is wide open for you to make something that’s wholly different and uniquely yours.
